The Magical Migration

There is something incredibly surreal about watching hundreds of thousands of African animals embark upon their annual migration in Kenya and Tanzania. With no man-made mechanics to guide them but only an inherent instinct on where to go, its quite simply a marvel to see this unfold in real life.

Where does is start and when?

Ha! That is the trick question…

The Great Migration of Wildebeest in East Africa typically starts in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The timing is the unpredictable one as it all depends on the rainfall patterns, but it generally begins in the late autumn to early winter, around April to June.

During this period, vast herds of wildebeest, along with zebras and other herbivores, start moving northwards towards the Masai Mara in Kenya, in search of fresh grazing. then all the way south into Tanzania’s Serengeti and the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, before circling up and around in a clockwise direction.

August is generally considered the best time to witness the dramatic river crossings from the northern Serengeti into the Masai Mara. You’ll need a passport to cross into Kenya from Tanzania… The Masai Mara National Reserve is open to members of the public so for a more exclusive safari experience, head for the private conservancies that are contiguous with the reserve – we know the best ones 🙂
