How does one tell the difference between a Male and Female Giraffe?
Giraffes don’t have true horns — they have ossicones.
Ossicones are skin-covered, cartilage-based bony growths that fuse to the skull as the giraffe matures.
Both males and females have them from birth.
How to Tell Male vs Female by Ossicones:
Males
Ossicones are usually thicker, bald (ha ha), and blunt on top.
They lose the hair from frequent “necking” (fighting by swinging their necks against rivals).
Mature males can also develop extra bony lumps (“calcified growths”) on their skulls.
Females
Ossicones are thinner, more delicate, and covered with tufts of hair at the tips.
They generally look smoother since females don’t fight as much.
So tell us, what is this giraffe, M or F?
