The sounds of bone crunching…
Watch as 2 hyenas methodically devour an impala carcass.
Contrary to what most people think, hyenas are highly capable predators – they can run for lengthy periods of time and have tenacity and determination. They have a disproportionately large heart (1% of their body weight) enabling them to continue for long chases. They are even known to take down buffalo when they hunt in co-ordinated packs.
Their jaws are short and robust, with strong interlocking joints that enhance its mechanical advantage during biting. Hyenas can pulverise bones with ease – this ability is crucial for accessing nutrient rich marrow.
Dinner anyone?
