This week, Rich and Matt have been lucky enough to ‘spot’ Giza, the black leopard of Laikipia, Kenya. She has captured the imagination of wildlife enthusiasts and researchers alike. Her striking ebony coat is a result of a rare genetic condition called melanism that sets her apart from other leopards in the whole of Africa!
Why is Giza Black?
Giza’s black coat is caused bymelanism, a genetic condition resulting from a recessive mutation in theASIPgene. While her coat appears jet black from a distance, faint leopard spots (rosettes) are visible up close or under certain lighting conditions.
Melanism is a recessive trait, meaning both parents must carry and pass on the gene for it to manifest. Giza’s mother is a standard spotted leopard, but her father is believed to be melanistic, making Giza’s coloration possible.
Will Giza Mate with Other Leopards?
Yes, Giza can mate with other leopards. If she mates with a melanistic male, their offspring will likely inherit the black coat. However, if she mates with a spotted leopard carrying the melanistic gene, there’s only a chance that their cubs will be black. If the spotted partner does not carry the gene, all offspring will have spotted coats.
How Old is Giza?
Giza was first observed as a young leopard still dependent on her mother. Based on observations and reports from 2023 and 2024, she is estimated to be around 4–5 years old as of this month (Feb ’25).
The Challenges and Resilience of Giza
Giza’s life in Laikipia has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. As a skilled huntress, she has adapted to survive despite competition from larger male leopards who often steal her kills. Her resilience and ability to adapt have allowed her to thrive in this competitive environment.
For instance, she developed a strategy of hunting two dik-diks (small antelope) per night—one as an offering to deter competitors and another for herself.
Conclusion
Giza’s story is one of beauty, adaptation, and survival and Rich and Matt have been lucky enough to film and photograph her.
