South African Magazine, Getaway, has listed the top underrated cities to visit in Africa, one of them being our favourite, Kigali in Rwanda.
Why?
The once ‘sleepy’ capital city has evolved into one of the safest cities in the world, as well as the hippest city in Africa.
Here are 5 top things to do in Kigali:
1. Explore Kimironko Market: Kigali’s largest and most vibrant market, Kimironko, is the perfect place to experience local Rwandan culture.
You’ll find exotic fresh fruits hanging from rafters and displayed hodge podge style, artisanal crafts and vibrant textiles that showcase local talent.
2. Inema Arts Center: This contemporary and sophisticated art gallery is a hub for Rwandan art and culture. It displays the works of local artists, ranging from paintings to sculptures. The center also offers dance performances, workshops, and events, providing insight into Rwanda’s cultural and creative community.
3. Enjoy Dining and Nightlife in Kigali: Kigali has a growing food scene with a variety of restaurants offering both local Rwandan dishes (like Brochettes: Grilled meat skewers, usually made with goat, beef, or fish). They’re a favourite street food and are popular at local bars and gatherings. Don’t forget to have a drink and dance at the CocoBean!
4. Visit Nyandungu Eco Park: Spot up to 70 species of birds, including migratory and endemic birds. Explore the park’s diverse habitats, from lush forests to open savannas where you’ll get to see exotic butterflies, flowers, and trees.
5. Ride an e-bike around the city: The city has a low crime rate and park-lined boulevards. Enjoy a relaxing breakfast featuring fresh bread, hummus, falafel, and other delicious foods. Visit important places like the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial and stop to take pictures of the city’s hills and beautiful views.
